The reason 538 is good is it actually simulates the election based on the polls and the margins of error that are built into them. You can see the percentage chance that the polls are wrong/right enough in each state that the actual vote will turn out to be a McCain victory. Polls that just give a single number without error context and probability analysis are pretty worthless.
