Garrdorr,
How long did it take you to come up with a title so subtly offensive?
The police are finding inconsistencies in the victims story. I can't believe someone would fabricate a story like this, so hopefully that isn't the case.
The initial crime was definately not politically motivated. It was an ATM robbery. Hopefully they catch whoever did this.

The site seems to be slashdotted/boingboinged/farked/etc. Do you have a cache you can quote in for us?

Police say inconsistencies in McCain staffer's story
Friday, October 24, 2008
By Jerome L. Sherman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Police say there are inconsistencies in the story of a McCain campaign staffer who told them she was mugged in Bloomfield on Wednesday night by a man who etched a "B" on her cheek when he saw a McCain sticker on her car.
Ashley Todd, 20, of College Station, Texas, spent five hours with robbery detectives last night at police headquarters, where she took a polygraph test. She told police that a man robbed her as she tried to take money from an ATM machine at Pearl Street and Liberty Avenue around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Ms. Todd told police she then began walking to her car, which had McCain stickers on it. She told police that although the robber had moved away from her, he became agitated when he saw her car, punched her in the back of the head, pushed her to the ground and carved the letter into her face. Yesterday, she said the man sexually assaulted her, a detail that police said she didn't mention in the initial report.
Police today said that security camera footage from the Citizens Bank doesn't show the incident, but it could have happened outside the camera's range. Police also said they have found no witnesses to the attack. Ms. Todd has said she will return for further interviewing today and will help police create a composite sketch of her attacker.
He is described as a 6-foot 4-inch, 200-pound black man, with medium build and short black hair.

Most of the stories from women about getting raped and having the offender carve something into their body are fake. Like the one Sharpton had to eat a turd sandwhich on.

I think it was embarrassing how Fox & Drudge were literally pinching their nipples over this story before it was remotely vetted.

Is that really a turn-on? If someone pinched my nipples, I'd break their jaw, myself included.Harlowe wrote:I think it was embarrassing how Fox & Drudge were literally pinching their nipples over this story before it was remotely vetted.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Re: A citizen acting upon natural impulse
Maybe they were tweaking them?
Something that equaled seccccccx-sual excitement. Seriously, seeing their sites and hearing the talk radio guys interviewed literally drooling over this story like they had an atomic blast in the pants was embarrassing - it would have been amusing as well, but considering how race-baiting it was, well, that's just not funny. What is even worse - is that several news sources said that it was someone from the McCain camp pushing the "B= Barack" thing before it was vetted with the police department.
Drudge hasn't had this big of an erection since Monica Lewinsky. Now, sadly it's a major case of blue balls.
By the way, I am waiting for this to be spun by the usual suspects as Obama's fault. That the disturbed girl is actually a plant. That she's actually an elite Obama operative, pretending to be a McCain supporter that fabricated this whole sordid thing so that it would actually come back to bite McCain's campaign folks in the ass. Because she obviously appears intelligent enough (and not at all disturbed) to predict that the McCain camp would immediately try to push and embellish upon an invented story about a scary black Obama supporter before vetting it.

It was McCain's Pennsylvania communications director that was pushing the Obama link before anything in this hoax was vetted.
As bad as that was, the worst race-baiting was done by John Moody at Fox News. He's the VP in charge of setting the editorial tone and direction of the News division, and he wrote this sick piece about the incident.

They were clearly hoping to use this incident to scare people out of voting for Obama. I'm absolutely amazed at how transparent and brazen their ploy was. Unfortunately for them the incident did turn out to be a hoax, and Fox News and several right-wing pundits are now forever linked to race-baiting.If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.
If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.

She's clearly a schizophrenic."She is stating that she was in her vehicle driving around, and she came up with this idea," she said. "She said she has prior mental problems and doesn't know how the backward letter 'B' got on her face."
However, Todd was the only one in the vehicle, and "when she saw the 'B' she thought she must have been the one who did it," Bryant said.

Re: A citizen acting upon natural impulse
There is no question that she is mentally ill. Press looking in to her past have verified that she has a history of mental illness.
lone nut jobs like this however do serve as symbols for the greater problems within the groups they identify with. They channel and amplify the zeitgeist.
To amuse myself this weekend I looked at the Free Republic blog. I dug back to the first articles they had on this from Oct. 23rd and read through the comments. Lots of people making subtly racist comments like "Did you notice it was a black man?" and lots of comments like "I'm stocking up on ammo for the night of Nov 4" The freep boards are heavily moderated to purge the worst of the hate speech, but a lot of it still can easily read between the lines.
To use a horribly worn out cliche: She is not the disease. Just a symptom.

I agree with Kulaf. Todd's actions shouldn't be used to draw conclusions about the groups she was involved in.
That said, the attempted race-baiting exploitation by the McCain campaign and some in the media is another matter entirely.

Unfortunatly race is an issue that both sides are guiltiy on. While not overtly using it McCain has certainly hinted at it......and Obama's side is quick to tie almost any criticizm of him or his record to it. Sad really.Lurker wrote:I agree with Kulaf.
