It's the fact he's President. It matters not what's been done, or what will be done, but it's a bit of a herd mentality that no longer exists, be it better or worse. No one's willing to make the sacrifices that the people of earlier generations had or chose to make.

and no DD, you're saying it WILL affect me, but it currently does not as I already have a car loan at a reasonable enough rate, and I have no credit cards, and no house payment nor am I attempting to get a mortgage, i receive insurance through my employer which I pay based upon my salary and since I'm salaried I don't have to worry about it going up or down. I receive no state benefits and frankly I have enough children I could claim all my kids as exemptions on my W-2's and I'd probably be owed money.

I am indeed worried about a depression, and about the hard(er) times ahead coming, and more so because I am a parent with children to provide for and to feed and clothe and raise to live on THEIR own someday. However I'm not sure the bailout will fix the problem, but on the other hand I'm not sure NOT paying the bailout would fix the problem either.

Unless your entirely self-sufficient (including being self-employed), it will affect you directly. I don't know how to put it any plainer than that but feel free to bury your head in the sand.

Ari -

I owe nothing but a car payment (with just a few months to go) and a mortgage. I'm self-employed. And I'm scared shitless about the economic downturn. The only bright side to me (if you can call it that), is that I could lose 50% of my business and still survive. But I'd be laying off most of my staff. And I think that's what Dd is referring to. This crisis WILL affect you, and it will come at you from many directions. Maybe your employer has to start saving some money, so the company stops contributing to the health insurance. Maybe there are some lay-offs. Or some "glitches" in payroll. Maybe pay cuts. And all of those things are out of your control.

If people lose homes in your area, they are going to try and get a rental. That may push rents up in your area if there isn't enough vacancies to absorb the demand, and that may affect you if you're faced with a rent increase. There are all sorts of ways that this crisis can tag you. You may think you're insulated, but there is too much interedependency in the economy for that to be the case. In other words, if something bad happens to you, it won't be because you don't have credit cards or owe a lot of money to someone. It will be something completely out of your control, and you'll be collateral damage.

Your attitude is like someone saying they won't get hurt walking into a gun battle because they aren't carrying a gun.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

The first sentence is truth for everyone but the top 1% of the population, and it's sad... really, it's sad that the economy has come to this.

The second sentence is semi truth as well. Maybe I'm in a bit of denial, but at least I can admit it, and at least I'm interested in a solution and doing everything I can TO insulate myself the best ways I possibly can, like you are as well I'm sure. Credit where it's due. Also when I'm wrong I can admit it,and if I knew the answers I wouldn't ask the questions. I appreciate that sometimes on the board I can be addressed without being treated like the redheaded step child... so thanks, really (to Ddrak and Harlowe too) =)

Didn't you recently land your job Ari? Unless you're in a critical role, when times are tough, the new hires are the first to go. Could the company survive without you? If the answer is yes, you should be scared shitless. I'm scared shitless, and I'm the "star quarterback" of the company. I'm also still the new guy after 5 years, but I'm more worried about what all star quarterbacks worry about, that some kid half my age can do my job for half the money. It's all up to the guy running the show, and as Embar pointed out, it's not much better being that guy. That and the captain goes down with the ship, where someone like me could hop on a different ship and be none the worse for wear. But even being well known and well liked throughout the insurance industry, and knowing several companies that would be interested in hiring me, I'm still scared shitless. Our company has recently landed some big clients and I'm scared shitless. They could stiff us or go under themselves.

You're the only person on the internet or in the wide world that I've seen make that kind of ignorant statement. It's clear you'll be singing 'happy days' until the train leaves the tracks, and your kids will pay for your ignorance.

Supposedly McCain is going to (flip flop) Introduce a new tax policy today

I have no issue with either candidate modifying their economic plans in light of the current situation......I would be more troubled if they didn't.

Same here. That term is so 2004-Election that it's become tired and meaningless anyway. I should hope they both change their minds on issues if the situation changes and it's the sensible thing to do.

It's another one of those vacuous terms used during a campaign.
