ET and Star Wars 3 (that damn rancor) gave me nightmares when I was a wee little one. But I wouldn't call them scary movies.

When I was small, The Never Ending Story really freaked me out. Something about "glowing wolf eyes" gets me going (Never Ending Story 1, Lady In The Water, etc...) The first time I saw The Ghost In The Darkness, I was pretty on edge too.

Yeah, the Hellraiser series is pretty cool. They are actually my boyfriend's and best friend's favorite movies. They both insist that Hellraiser 2 is the best one, but I really liked the 3rd one.

It all gave me nightmares for weeks. I would wake up screaming.

I'm 28, we rented it. It was in... 1992 or 1993. It was scarey don't get me wrong, but at the time I wasn't allowed to watch anything over PG and PG was fairly tame then ( i wasn't allowed to see Batman when it came out, the only movie on a whole island (literally) and I wasn't allowed to see it) still compared to now.

I loved the Never Ending Story !

I just don't get affected by any of that kind of stuff. I mean really, i'm terribly afraid of spider... little ones, hairy ones, big ones. I opened my curtains the other day, as I do every morning, and saw a tree thing spider on the outside window and i started shrieking. I thought it was on the inside and i was waiting for it to attack me and suck out my face or something.

Actually I watched Arachnophobia recently and in the middle of the movie a god damned spider crawled next to me on the couch. B/F almost had a heart attack when I started screaming =(

Then we watched 8 legged freaks... dude another spider !

God damn you couldn't possibly get any more gay...

Exorcist is definitely up there. Seriously fucked me up for a long time. I also thought the original chainsaw massacre was rough at the time, especially considering everyone believed it was a true story. Even today I thought they did pretty good in the suspense department considering there was no blood in the movie, yet if you asked most people at the time they would have sworn it was bloody as hell. Oh and as far as recent, I thought "The Strangers" did a really good job. The well known scene when she's standing there and dude is right by her is freakin awesome. I thought the rest of the movie was done pretty well too, even though it got pretty mixed reviews.

I think movies that have a lot of suspense and only a few actual scary scenes are considerably better. Movies that rely on cheap thrills are bullshit.

I thought it was funny how the spiders could only jump around in that movie. Jumping Spiders can leap pretty far, but they can also walk...

I totally agree on both counts - The Strangers was a very decent suspenseful scare. Personally, I love suspense/realistic scares and I can't stand straight up hack-n-slash movies.

I had some pretty good scares from books as a kid - when I was in the 6th grade I remember being totally freaked out by The Exorcist (my parents never let me watch the actual movie, I think I was 17-18 before I actually saw it), The Amityville Horror and Helter Skelter. My aunt was so kind to give me those to read. Thank you for the nightmares!

I haven't seen the Strangers. Adding it to Netflix.

Yeah the Amityville Horror book was creepy--especially with all the demon/Jody pictures.

Ok, I am adding this to the thread. I just started watching that show, Supernatural, season 1. Maybe my expectations weren't that high, but holy shit, this show is a lot better (and scarier) than I ever could have imagined. First five minutes of the pilot got my attention. I threw it up on Youtube for anyone interested:

Maybe I'm just in the mood for this stuff, but this show is pretty damn good. I'm about halfway through season 1. The material they come up with is familiar (bloody mary curse, shapeshifters, demons, guy with a hook,) but there's always a unique twist. It just seems like a smart show. I'm impressed. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who is into horror or supernatural shows.

Wish I had given it a look-see sooner.

It's pretty creepy. I mean, it's a television show on WB or CW or whatever they call it now. Charmed aired there (and I enjoyed that as non-scary fluff from time to time.) WB seems to have "work horse" shows that they just keep on the air for 5, 6, 7 seasons.

This one surpasses anything I've seen on WB. I mean, it's not Exorcist, but there are some freaky episodes. My husband watched the first episode and his comments were, "that was fucked up."

I think, "Bloody Mary" has been the creepiest. They just go where I've never seen a television show really go (even the X-Files.) And the guys are hot. :) I can be a dirty ole cougar....

If you like Supernatural the first season you really have got to watch it further. The 2nd and 3rd season take the show to a whole new level of awesome. Honestly I didn't care too much for the show when it first came out, but after sticking with it for a bit I really liked it and then season 2 blew me away.

Good to know that it gets better. Wasn't sure that was possible. I mean, I know it's formula-television, but it rocks it hard for a network series.

I started watching their entire lineup religiously when it was still The CW. then they merged with UPN or whatever and started having Moesha-esque shows and i just stopped. Supernatural lost me after awhile and I haven't checked it out since, but I always thought it was a really good show.

Well, this takes me back.

When A Stranger Calls. That moment when the cops call back always gets me.

Phantasm was good and scary too, of course I was REAL young when I saw that one.

The Believers was a good one, too.

My number one horror movie of all time is still Jaws, though.

I finished all three seasons of Supernatural, since I wasn't watching the latest season on TV, I'm going to wait for season 4 on DVD. I really enjoyed it. The first season was okay, but 2 & 3 were awesome.

Thanks Allu!!!

Sweet! I'm into the 4th season on air now. They've only had 4 episodes so far and I just watched them on hulu.

I was really surprised by the show. The two actors have such awesome chemistry and I found myself cracking up a lot. I still see an episode now and then when I'll think, "holy shit, is this on television? Seriously? Decapitated women hanging from the ceiling by chains on their wrists--blood spurting--gore gallore."

I do miss pa-Winchester, though. He was badass.

And damn them crossroads demons. Bad juju....

And I know it's not really "horror" but I just started a show, "Dead Like Me." Pretty funny so far.
