The Slip - NiN
NiN came out with a new album that you can download for free on their website.

I really like it so far. Ghosts is good too but they stopped letting people download it for free since The Slip came out.

I enjoyed it. I still like With Teeth better, but this is good stuff.

What do you guys think is the best of NIN? I kept hearing all this hype and I've tried listening to it to see what everyone around me idolizes. I listed to their first CD and The Downward Spiral. I wasn't impressed with either. I'm willing to give Trent another chance.

I didn't think it was too bad, not great, but mediocre at best.

Pretty Hate Machine sounds cliched these days only because it's fresh ideas were used by so many later bands.

Don't let this be your "other chance". The Slip isn't terrible, but as mentioned above it isn't nearly Reznor's best work. These all sounded a bit rushed to me. Had a little too much casio keyboard'ish sound for my taste. With Teeth is probably my favorite, and it has a little bit of a studio produced sound. Every Day Is Exactly The Same, Only, and The Hand That Feeds are the singles released off the album, but the whole thing was pretty decent.Select wrote:What do you guys think is the best of NIN? Best NIN? With Teeth or Pretty Hate Machine. Broken/Fixed/Sin as close followups.
Worst? The Fragile. 2 discs full of horrible boredom. I stopped listening to NIN for several years after that tragedy came out. Year Zero is pretty bad too, but I think they meant it to be stupid stuff they were toying around with.
My favorite NIN songs are: Wish, Something I Can Never Have, March of the Pigs, Dead Souls (The Joy Division cover on The Crow Soundtrack) and pretty much all of With Teeth.
I would also like to point out that Pretty Hate Machine is from 1989. Simply "not being impressed" with it is about as useful as comparing The Cult with Buckcherry.

What do someone's personal music tastes have to do with "being useful"? I listened to both, knowing which years each were from, and I did not like either. I don't understand what you're trying to get at.

You'd have to know the other two bands to get the crack. They're nothing alike at all. I guess the point was, if you didn't like either album, the band is probably not for you.

Re: The Slip - NiN
I have never heard of either of those bands so yes, I would not get the crack. I had said NIN wasn't my thing, but I was willing to try again. Tax and Minute listed songs I'm interested in hearing and I heard a NIN song recently I did like. If we're going to talk about "useless", it was a useless and pointless crack.

I'm not starting this shit again. Sorry for the “useless” crack. You're right, I'm wrong. Whatever.

I haven't really had a problem with any of his stuff as a whole. Individual songs, yes - but I find just as many individual songs that I truly love to hear from him.
If I had to pick one track from each album?
Pretty Hate Machine - Sin
Broken - Suck
The Downward Spiral - March Of The Pigs
The Fragile - The Wretched
With Teeth - Sunspots
Year Zero - In This Twilight
