Some Bad Things Happened
I received a call this past week and found out my dorm room flooded. (Still finding out why, but it's looking to be the school's fault and not just "a lot of rain") 1 to 2 inches of water they said... all over the room, leading to the way back wall. At least four rooms were flooded that badly in my wing.
I don't go back until January 2nd and I've been freaking out. I'm worried about my possessions, but I'm not worried about any of it as much as I am worried about my computer. I had it sitting on the floor in the back of the room next to my drafting table. It's a $2000 comp I built about two years back (with Xil's help) and it was supposed to last me a good five to six years with minor upgrades. I don't and won't have the money to replace it. I'm not as freaked out as I could be because I was told my computer was saved as the water came in. But... what they say and what I see may be two different things.
When I go back and take a first look at it what should I look out for? What should I test for? If it did get a little wet... is it possible it will be ok? If it got soaked, I'm assuming it will be dead. Nothing was plugged in when I left for break. I left all the cords attached to the PC and then going into the surge protector and I just unplugged the protector from the wall. All I know is the PC was moved to my lofted bed. I don't know if it got wet at all (it's very likely it did) I don't know what cords got wet. As long as they've dried out, the cords should be ok, right? Is this the same for the surge protectors or should I replace those before plugging anything in to test the PC?
Yeah, it's a dorm room, but it's become my primary home. Consider this as about the same as an apartment flooding. My home >.< The waiting is killing me and any information will help me to chill out.

IIRC, most electronic components won't have problems with water as long as you dry them most thoroughly before powering it up again.

I'd be hoping that it was screwed up - then I'd get the school to buy me a new one.
As for what you should look for, if it turns on and works then you're good to go!

That would be nice, but it's not as easy as it sounds. That takes a hell of a lot of fighting, which I'm preparing for, just in case. I also would hate waiting for them to replace it. They'd slow down the process as much as possible.I'd be hoping that it was screwed up - then I'd get the school to buy me a new one.

Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

So you paid 2000 dollars for it 2 years ago which makes it worth about 50 bucks? LOL

Well a lot less than two years (I thought wrong)... so it's about $100?

Re: Some Bad Things Happened
if i were you and i found anything wet, Id use a blowdryer to dry out all the components, keyboard included and anything else that might be wet, then id let it sit for a while and THEN attempt to power it on. Ive already been down that alley where Ive used something that i thought was just a little wet and next thing you know 2 weeks later i have keys that arent working.

I've had success with putting smaller electronic components in the oven for 12 hours, on the lowest setting (about 170 degrees). Fixed my mobile phone that way after I dropped it in some water. When I pulled it out and powered it on, it croaked. After I took it apart and stuck the parts in the oven for about 12 hours, reassembled the phone, it works like a champ now.Desolus wrote:if i were you and i found anything wet, Id use a blowdryer to dry out all the components, keyboard included and anything else that might be wet, then id let it sit for a while and THEN attempt to power it on. That's a huge fight. Universities love to take your money, giving it up is another story. Your pops writes them a letter, Select, and something will happen really fast.Embar Angylwrath wrote:You like to spout that your dad's a big stick attorney. I'd pray for the puter croaks. A new one would be great. Plus, I'm sure the school has a deal going with Apple or Dell or both and you could just have them buy you a new one that you pick out.

Re: Some Bad Things Happened
LOL I would hate to trade in for a Dell or an Apple. My custom built is <3
Although... we do have quad cores in our labs...
But still, I honestly would not want to deal with the down time or the fight. I've worked for the school almost the entire time I've been here. They have some really shady tactics and they love to delay things if it doesn't favor them. I just want my good old reliable PC asap. I don't want to be greedy and I don't want to have to wait.

Re: Some Bad Things Happened
My company has a department that handles damaged computer claims. If the computer is a mainstream off the shelf computer we use a blue book to determine it's used value.
If it is a custom built job, we just use 20% per year devaluation. And 20% is generous when you consider Moore's law.

You wash yours first and I'll see if I like your technique.

For future reference Select: most universities will reach agreements or settle if they are threatened with a) media attention or b) a lawsuit, neither of which they really can afford. At least in Oregon they can't, so it worked for me when I needed it to.
