need some help

Post by Enrich »

A quick background, to let you know what kinda comp savy individual yoru dealing with. I recently got a new comp, upgraded from a 1.2celeron 1gig ram 10gig hd to a 3.0ghz p4, Gigabyte GA- 8trs350mt motherboard. 10000 rpm 74gig hd, 1gig matched dual channel(?) ram, Gforce FX5500 OC 256mb video card.

Now, the HD is a temp HD until my HD comes in from the manufacturer, which im getting a Seagate barricuda 250gig 7200rpm HD. The first one i had alot of troubles out of, with i believe bad sectors.

Now, here is where i need the help, i have everything up and running, a new edition of Windows xp installed that contained service pack 2. Using the same ethernet card, modem, and ethernet cables. But my old pirated compy of XP did not have the built in firewall and all the other new stuff im unaware of. But my normal internet connection seems to be alot slower, more comparable to dial up when going on webpages. I do have DSL.

I have installed the newest drivers i can find from Nvidia website for the Video card, the most recent ethernet drivers, most recent edition of XP, and a few games.

Now i tried installing doom 3 tonight. and im getting crash after crash. not even able to get into the game fully. So i initially thought it is a sound card issue, so i removed my soundcard, which is some 6 year old Creative card i bought for like 20 bucks when i did my first comp upgrade to play Velious. And am using the onboard sound, which the guy who i was working with on building my comp told me the onboard sound card is better.

Now, i know for sure, i have not downloaded any MB drivers, XP updates, or any other drivers i might not be aware that exist. for i am not the most software knowledgable person on this forum.

I do need help in trying to fully optomize my system though. i will start out with the XP updates, and go from there.. if anyone has some advice please reply.

Post more details of the crash. If it's a BSOD (blue screen of death) or unhandled exception, post some of the exact text. I don't need every single line, just the basic start of the error message.

Chances are if Doom3 did not install the latest version of DirectX as part of its normal installation process you are running what......DX7 I think was the default shipped with standard XP. Install SP2 for XP and then do all of the updates and get up to DX9. Then go get your latest sound and video drivers for your hardware and install those. Then let us know if you are still having issues.

Just go to http://update.microsoft.com and install everything that's either critical or recommended.

As everyone is repeating, they agree with your above step: start out with the XP updates. If the problem persists, post more details.

My copy of xp was up to date with service pack 2, and i did all the updates.

I think i narrowed down most of my crashes that came from running games to my sound card. So i have upgraded to a soundblaster audigy(?) 7.1 sound with 24bi proccising.

But i also sent my cmp back to the guy who was building it for me, and am ading in a gforce 7800vid card. if anything else happens when i get it back ill let ya'll know

You may have already done this, but if you've enabled the onboard sound, you should take out the old sound card. There are always conflicts with in-board sound and soundcards. Even if you've disabled the onboard sound, some MBs still have issues if soundcards are connected to them.
