Monitor suggestions

Post by Kula »

Well my trusty Viewsonic 21" monitor blew last Friday so I am in the market for a reasonably priced LCD. Right now I am looking at either the Samsung 940B or the Viewsonic VX924.

Anyone have any comments on either or care to offer an alternative? $400 after rebates is pretty much all I want to spend.

I have a Samsung 930B and am very happy with it. I assume the 940B is just a later revision.

Seems to be. Right now I am leaning toward the Viewsonic. I can get either for around $375 - $400 after rebates, but from the reviews I read the Viewsonic has better color, plus the response time is 5ms faster.

I think many gamers exaggerate response time on LCDs. The Dell 2405 has a 12ms response time (dog slow by some standards), but looks great, even with a fast paced FPS.

To answer your question:

If price sin't an issue, I'd go with the Samsung due to the better contrast ratio and my above feelings on the response time issue.

I use a Samsung 912t at work and love it.

Cheers,

Well I can get the 940B from CDW for 379.95 minus a $40 rebate so it would run me 339.95.

Anyone know any other places to snag hardware that might be cheaper and have a resonable return/service policy?

My wife has an LG L1920P which is supposed to have a response time of 25ms. Mine was advertised as 8ms when I bought it, but now I see Samsung peddling it as 4ms (grey to grey).

To be honest, there is almost no visual difference between my monitor and her monitor. Sometimes you notice a slight blurring when turning fast in EQ2, but that's about the most of it. I certainly wouldn't get worried about any response time as long as it's below about 15ms (which is over 60fps anyway).

However, Viewsonic is also a good name so I won't go discounting the quality there - just haven't had experience with it.

Got my 940B from Newegg. It's pretty sweet and after rebate only ran me $300.

$345.98 with shipping and there is a $40 mail in rebate to Samsung. So far I like the new monitor a lot.....but it is wierd looking at an LCD after five years starring at a 21" tube.

You get used to it... much too quickly and then never want to go back.

Oh - make sure when you get a new vid card that it has a DVI output. DVI+LCD = creamy goodness.

Yeah that was one thing that bummed me out was the Samsung did not include a DVI cable. So I am running analog until I build my new system.

When you get a DVI cable, make sure it's dual channel. A lot of HDTV ones are only single channel.
