The material withstood the shock pressures generated by the impacts of up to 250 tons per square centimeter. This is approximately equivalent to dropping four diesel locomotives onto an area the size of one’s fingernail.

Just a point - it's not equivalent to dropping locomotives becasue the impact profile of a locomotive and bullet are significantly different, mostly in terms of the momentum delivered and kinetic energy.

It would be more accurate to talk in terms of bullets than trains.

Wru. The theory is sound, but there's two big negatives, unless they actually manage to make the TiS work - which is gonna be rough as hell, because tungsten's tendancy to form complex structures is, afaik, relatively unique amoung the metals.

1: As noted in the article, tungsten and all its compounds are heavy as fuck. This stuff is gonna ring in at around the same density as steel - which is bad news for a soldier that has to carry it in an all the weight on the shoulders flak jacket. Mideval armor was tolerable because the weight was rigid and distributed - A guy wearing a properly constructed suit of full plate can do a cartwheel, a guy wearing a twenty pound flak jacket's gonna have a rougher time of it.

2: The PRC controls the lion's share of tungsten production. This summer, the commodity price of the metal powder went from $18-22 / kg to $100-110 / kg because China stopped exporting. They've loosened up and it's come down since then, but...
