Comp question

Post by Sabiar »

I hadn't updated my BIOS with ASUS in along time so I decided to flash it to the newest version for my motherboard. Afterwards EQ2 was freezing up and I started getting "VPU recover" error from ATI. I uninstalled and cleaned up drivers using DriverCleaner and reinstalled the latest Omega drivers for my vid card. It still seems a little choppy in WoW and EQ2 and I was wondered what I might also try and solve the issue or at least diagnose it. Heres my system specs.

P4C800E-Deluxe Asus Mobo
American Megatrends BIOS
P4 i875P , 478
1gig 3200 Corsair RAM
ATI 9800PRO 256MB
80 Gig Seagate Barracuda HD.

Also ran the new 3DMark05 benchmark and got a score around 2900. Not sure if its that yippy or not.

Talked to my IT guy at work and he said something about possibly updating AGP chipset drivers or chipset drivers along with the BIOS flash..couldn't find chipset drivers for my mobo on the ASUS website.

Try downloading chipset drivers directly from Intel?

VPU recover errors are annoying. I used to get them now and then on my 9700pro before I upgraded it. My best solution was to turn off AGP Fast Writes in the BIOS and disable the whole VPU reporting thing in the ATI drivers.

I concur, try to find those agp updates.

Intell is going be your best to find them as DD had mentioned.

Your benchmark score is good actually. I will take a look around the MSCE site and see if perhaps they have them posted in the tech section there for you.

Ya..I turned FW off. Omega more or less tells you too turn them off anyways. Guess I'll try downloading the chipset drivers from Intel directly. I really don't know jack shit about BIOS/Chipsets and usually prefer not to touch that stuff given the choice.

Is 2900 a crappy score for a 3DMark05?

After you uninstalled and cleaned up drivers, the VPU recover error vanished, right? What drivers, exactly, are you using? And are you overclocking the card?

If the only thing you're experiencing is a perf degredation, the agp updates are a good first step.

Yes..after I cleaned up the drivers and installed Omega the VPU went away. I'm using the latest Omega drivers currently. I turned down the resolution and set the refresh to 60 in EQ2. My card should be able to handle 75 refresh though right? I'll try to get the AGP chipset driver updates when I get home from work tonight and see if that works. Also should note that 2 usb ports are on the same IRQ as my vid card..not sure if that makes a difference.

Trying to override the IRQ assignments is more likely to impede stability than letting Windows put them on the same IRQ when it feels like it.
