I still remember most of the final turnin battles for my first of 6 epics, on my druid. The druid epic was always easy, but it was my first and significant. Veteran Crew, Ethereal Knighthood, and folk from Deus Ex Machina helped with most of my 6 epics.

Dragging people up to sky to get my warrior a wingblade and my mage a Crown was memorable, if only for the fight on Bee island with Dasche and Jagr come up to save the day. We beat the tar out of those bees.

Being CoH'd deep into Chardok to kill ghosts up in the tower. Akhbar, Tishadh, Klaana, Lulu were usually there.

My first time in fear, I had just hit 46. Crelone was leeding a Blood Inferno raid there, and I died 2 or 3 times and was bumped down to 45. I had a screen show of "/ 45" done inside Fear, but it's long since gone.

I tagged along with Poison Arrow once in NToV, and we killed um, whoever became the 'boss' after the Ring of Vulak was in place. I remember that the dragon had a nice gflux that knocked us all over the place; but we still won. That was a blast.

I still remember the sounds of the bees, wolves, orcs from out in front of Felwithe. The environment in Gfay was awesome. My first character in beta was a HE Wizard. My first char in retail was a HE Wizard. My 2nd char was a WE Druid, so I knew the sights and sounds of gfay well.

I remember when it took a well-oiled raid to kill Lucan in Freeport. Having to kite Brother Jentry around to keep him from healing Lucan. Zoning back into EC to drop agro... 2 months ago i restored my account and went to Freeport out of boredome and solo'd Lucan right next to Jentry. It was a letdown.

Griffon/Slate to tunnel!

My first time zoning into WC to go to befallen, Dolfina was scurrying me along the south wall, high as we could, because "there could be hill giants". Then I saw my first Hill GIant, and it was fairly awe inspiring UO never really had anything like that in the few months I played it.

The first time zoning into um, the zone with all the Veeshan Dragons, Western Wastes? Seeing the variety of dragons, and the trains some bards could make was amazing.

Finall being able to kill D'Vinn. goddamn pigfucker. I loved Crushbone. I went from being scared to zone into the area at all, onto scared to cross the bridge, then too scared to go inside the castle, then frightened of the invis guards up the stairwell. That experience way back in 2000 was awesome.

Turning in my first peice of Leather Dragon Velious Armor. God damn that took forever to get to the quest guy. I tihnk it was a bracer, and I'm pretty sure I never got another peice of that armor.

Grieg's End was a fun zone. Killing Servitor with EK folk, kiting that guy who had the DA hammer with people from EK/VC. We never did try Grieg himself, even after I got a RGC clicky.

The half-dozen times I left 3 computers turned on at the login screen (Groul 60sk, Grout 60shm, Talaena 60dru) so I could help people with Ragefire as soon as he spawned. I don't remember everyone I helped with that, but it was a blast. I eventually had the favor returned for my own cleric, Dorfymagoo, who is still only level 51 and probably still camped in Skyfire. I didn't do much with him after I got the rez stick.

There was one City of Mist run with some EK folk. I was probably playing Talaena and Barshen, with Dasche Kreon and Jagr. We killed about 72 black reavers that day. We had 2 30+ reaver respawns in a row. It was fucking insane. We had to egress once after 32 or so. Came back, killed 30 more. I think we came away with 8 black reavers, selling for 20-30k a pop. I loved that zone.

I remember wevil the FBSS ninja looter. when Kunark came out, his corpses littered the LOIO/FM zone line. I won a forest loop within a month of Kunark coming out and made my first 1000pp selling it to some other druid.

Anoher kunark moment was a GM even in Felwithe where 2 massive GM-controlled ogres attacked King Tearis Thex (sp?) while dozens of us tried to dent them. They had insane regen and never died, that I remember. Luna or Duna (probably Duna) dueled Fenye over by the Wizard Spires (if they were even in the game way back before Kunark), in front of another GM character. I believe I was level 17 or 18, because they all left to go to freeport, and I remember I could not port to follow them; so I logged.

Swimming for what seemed like 50 hours, lost as hell, trying to find the pot room in Timorous Deep. I never bound there, but I know some people did, using it as a pre-nexus area.

i should really get back to work. heh

The most horrible thing you can read in groupchat was:

Vresk tells the group, "oopsss"
You tell the group, "what?"
Vresk tells the group, "oh... nothing... incoming Sontalek."

Hmmm...

Yes I had a lot of good memories with EQ.

1) The first day I got the game got me really excited.
2) I still remember the days when we used to have hell levels making leveling a bitch hehe.
3) I still remember when low level places like highold keep and the aviak city for example were filled up with xp'ers.
4) I also enjoyed the days when people were so nice back then trying to help each other out. I remember trying to make a run in West Karana (if I recall it right) at night and that stupid werewolf popped out of nowhere and killed me instantly. I was so afraid to zone back in to get my corpse when suddenly I got a tell from a higher level player that he would escort me back to my corpse ( sorry but I don't remember his name). And there was one time that a high level player just dropped by and gave me some stuff just because I was just a newb. Those acts of kindness made me enjoy the game so much.
5) My first Plane of Hate raid organized by Blood Inferno. I won a piece of hate armour that raid.
6) My first Plane of Fear raid with with different guild organizing the event. Trying to run to the Safe Spot the day before the scheduled raid made me nervous as I didn't want to train the current raid party.
7) My first VS raid to help a friend out with his epic. I remember doing those raids with a full complement of 40 or so members in the raid. We wiped the first try but succeded the second try.
8) Velks. Hehe who would forget Velks. That place would just fill up with so many people trying to get xp. Oh yes the rants as well.
9) ToV, WToV and NToV radis with Zenith. I really enjoyed these raids.

There are a lot more but I guess this will do.

Starting off in Gfay as a baby ranger was amazing.....
1. Learning to pull across the drawbridge in CB. For that matter waiting for a group to open up in CB. I went thru there the other day just for grins and it was empty. It's truely sad seeing how empty the old zones are

2. Learing how to run groups and lists underground in HK. (why does it rain in the cellar?)

3. Meeting and playing with many wonderful friends some still playing some not. (nods to Thordell, Luci, Rain, Samoa, Fosten, Woodana (who is very missd) and too many others to name.

4. The thrill of finishing my first epic. Waiting down at the bottom of the hole for the rest of guild to come help me with final battle. thought i was gonna pass out.

Does anyone else think they will continue server consolidations? Cuz it sure seems empty again in the world.

That reminds me of the animatrix episode where there is a bug in the city's programming and the kids that discover it can do amazing stuff for a while before they fix it.

Crushbone throne-room groups. When the Planes were THE high-end game.

I'd almost have to say my actual fondest memories were those first 20 levels on my first and second characters, playing my first MMORPG. There was a silly lighthearted feel to playing the game back then.

New games never re-capture that, for me at least.

That sums it up so well. I'll never forget playing a shadowknight and running around Nektulos. I saw someone cast a spell and I stood there for a good five minutes just staring in awe. The magic (all the bright colors) looked so amazing in the dark of nektulos. There was something about that forest. You never wanted to wander too far, lest you came across one of the BIG bears, or a fire beetle and his gang of friends. And the halflings? Good lord, I hated those little bastards.

Don't even bother Ari, they lost the moment they tried to compare the newbie levels from now a days to 5 years ago.

Interesting thought occurs -- Who is the longest standing EQ player still posting here?

xican.. i probably got into it about a month and a half after it was released.

i just personally dislike ari and her attention whore attitude.

and regardless of whether you played on the day it opened. 4 lvls in 4 months is a joke. i dont care what comp you were on. no wonder you played a mage.

frankly xican i dont understand where in all of this you figured that we musta been the "new generation" eq players who had it easy. I remember the days of camping goonday for batskull earrings and getting mad money for it :D

That's new blood. Level 56 after what, 7 years?

And while I'm sure Ari was exaggerating, the fact is back when the game first released the levels were a hell of a lot harder than they are now. Hell, don't they no longer have corpse runs before level 10 or something now?

Besides, 4 levels in 4 months isn't that bad... I was like level 11 after 5 months or some shit. And that's not even exaggerating. I think I spent the first 8 months doing more exploring (and subsequently, dying) than levelling.

The Ari hate runs rampent on the brell rant board lately. It comes and goes ;)

Hey xican, ever play the tutorial ? Were you with us when we all made trolls on Cazic or something and named them all with Brell in our names ? Ahh the things addicts do when their servers are down ;)

yep xican they were. But no where near what you said they were. we all did exploring. but as i recall to really do any exploring youd have to be a little higher than oh lvl 8. i mean running through the karanas. Hell even running around EF. Generally to do any exploring is rather difficult being such a low level.

wanna know why the ari hate comes and goes. It comes when you start talking, and it stops when you get muzzled by some fat bald dude you happen to be dating at the time.

man i think i should post something about how garbagemen are so underappreciated for all they go through in the day. maybe post a chain letter or something. Then brag to everyone how i am a volunteer garbageman.

Ari, shouldnt you be giving birth to yet another child? Its been a while hasnt it?

Lot of great memories, and new ones being made since I still play.

But one of several great personal memories from the old school days, back when hate and fear were reservations, was the Darkguard raid that stayed to call in some extra folks to whack Inny so I'd get my epic piece off him, after wiping once already. This was pre PoHate revamp.

I'd recently switched mains back to Araden, from my druid Kalandril, and it meant a lot to me when Adune did that. Lot of good people I met raiding with Darkguard and a couple other guilds regularly back in the day. Most are since retired now heh.

/salute all the folks I used to hang out with way back in the day
