Tonsil Question

Post by Klast Brell »

What the heck are they for? They get removed if they get infected so they must not be that important. What function do they serve in the body?

Tonsils are glandular tissue located on both sides of the throat. The tonsils trap bacteria and viruses entering through the throat and produce antibodies to help fight infections.

Though they cant be doing that great a job if the bacteria seems to be pwning them left right and center and the majority of people have to have them removed.

Of my eight siblings only one had their tonsils removed. I can only think of one friend that has had them removed . Although I know nothing of the statistics I seriously doubt that a majority of people have their tonsils removed. I think it was a lot more common to remove them in the 60's and 70's than it is today.

I ask because one of my tonsils has been hurting for a couple of days. Not both of them, just one. Otherwise I don't have any symptoms that I can tell.

My understanding is that it is rare to have tonsils removed any more. Typically speaking they treat tonsilitis and infections of the tonsils with heavy antibiotics and avoid removal.

I think that they stopped removing them back in the early 80's. I can't really remember for sure.

They have slacked off on it big time..

Have to have several past documented cases of tonsilitis, strep, etc for them to be removed.

Actually my daughter had hers removed. Apparently they were swollen for about a year, but she only got a minor cold or 2 during the time. She talked a bit funny but we assumed it was a 3 year old thing and she would outgrow it. her throat never hurt. The day it DID hurt we looked in her mouth and sure enough, giant tonsils. As soon as the doctor saw them he said they needed to come out. Now she's in speech therapy, but i mean who really looks in their kids mouth if there's no reason too ?

However removing tonsils is no longer the standered practice as it used to be, because there's not so much a point in removing them if the infection can be treated. Kind of like the same idea as c-sections. They'd rather try less invasive methods first.

Fuckin Google to the rescue: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=to ... gle+Search

I read that chronic bad breath is often caused by funky ass tonsils. They use "lasers" to kill the stinkies stuck in the crypts and it's all better and shit.

They stopped doing it (according to my PCP) because too many kids bled to death on the tables. Apparently there is a big ass blood vessel running through there some where.

You have to document "frequent severe cases" over several years before they consider taking them out (again according to my PCP). I know, because I've been having them documented about every 3 months for the last two years...but apparently they aren't serious enough.

Not to mention that my crappy HMO doesn't want to pay for it. Fuckers...have them going through a week every three months where it feels like someone took a bbq grill cleaner to their throats and see how they feel.

Anitbiotics will cure tonsilitis. Dont have them out if you can avoid it. They play a big role in infection control. Once you have had an infection in your tonsils you are more likely to get a repeat occurance but its easily treated with anitbiotics and wont kill you.

It was very common to have your tonsils out after a single infection in the past but attitudes have changed and they dont like to take them out unless its completely necessary. Mine had to come out they were beginning to disintergrate in my throat after years of infections. I had mine out as a kid but the only illness I ever got as a kid was tonsilitis (I somehow even avoided the food poisoning my whole family got) but now I catch every bug thats going around. I wish I still had mine but when they told me what the funny stuff was that kept appearing in my mouth was it wasnt much of a choice.

Ewww and after the operation I asked to see my tonsils (cause they normally keep them for you) and the doctor said they burst after he took them out and there wasnt much point in scraping it all up cause it was too disgusting.

Anyway thats my disgusting tonsil story.

I forgot to add that you can still get tonsilitis after having your tonsils removed. The tissue that connects your tonsils to your throat cannot be removed and you can get an infection in this. I've had tonsilitis 3 times in the last 20 years since I had them removed.

And if thats not bad enough they can also grow back.

Being retarded is actually a pretty good excuse. Being stupid, however, is not.
