Fanboi of WoW? Never played it. I've only been playing EQ2, if you go check the MMO section of this forum, you'll see I kept a log of my beta observations with all the changes and problems from a couple months before launch.Bahd Zoolander wrote:I find it hilarious that you're such a fanboi you don't realize the WoW dev team was crunching just as hard only to release after EQ2 and over a year late.
As for WoW not being on the release radar a year ago? You need to put down the crack pipe buddy. When the first previews started coming out in 2001 they had already been in development for 2 years. It's been ready to release "when it's done" for 2 years.
Try googling for "ea spouse" if you're really interested in how the game industry works, and perhaps after that you will understand why spreading the insane hours out over the year does not work.
WoW was nowhere near being released a year ago, I don't remember when they opened up beta, but there were no signs that the release was about to happen last year. Nothing but a lot of talk.
I took your advice and read the disgruntled spouse's take on software development at EA. I fail to see what bad managment practices at EA has to do with Moorgard admitting that they worked insane hours to get EQ2 out before WoW, unless you are trying to say that SOE has just as bad management as EA? If so, that wasn't really the point.
A project is a project. Either you meet the goals and timelines or you don't. The reality is that they kept changing the goals on the programmers, delayed the project, and at the same time decided that they were going to put out what ever they had that was workable before WoW came out. If you ask EQ2 beta players you'll see that everyone knew there were going to be some problems and that SOE had to know about them before release, because they kept making radical modifications. You would expect the game to be somewhat stable in design before release, it was in a state of flux. They had a great launch, and although there are problems I play the game regularly.
Hopefully the programmers were happy to work all those extra hours. I hope Smed kissed each one of them on the lips and gave them a big fat bonus check with the extra time off. But the only point I ever made was that they admitted that the rushed it out the door to beat WoW; regardless of problems or lack of testing on many changes, they put it out (and the statement that "we all have to understand"). I just thought it was a funny thing for Moorgard to say. Say you're in a store and the store manager tells you "I'll get to helping you after I've had my cup of coffee, everyone else is really busy right now, so you'll just have to wait sir." If someone said that to me in a store, I'd walk out and never go back. This is a little different, but it's the same idea.

WoW was in beta for about 10 months and in friends and family alpha for 5-6 months. The beta was delayed 3 months, how was it not on the radar? It was more polished in beta than alot of the crap other companies release. You don't seem to have followed WoW, so don't make assumptions.WoW was nowhere near being released a year ago, I don't remember when they opened up beta, but there were no signs that the release was about to happen last year. Where did they say this? They didn't, you inferred that the only reason the programmers would have worked extra hours was to beat WoW. You are wrong.Flunkie wrote:But the only point I ever made was that they admitted that the rushed it out the door to beat WoW

OK, I'll clairify it. The only point I made was that Moorgard essentially admitted that they rushed it out the door, ostensibly to beat WoW to the customers since it appeared that WoW would be released very soon. He didn't say they worked extra hours, he said they worked "insane hours". What other reason for pushing up the launch date by a week and working insane hours would you infer considering that everyone knew WoW was going to be released soon?Bahd Zoolander wrote:Where did they say this? As a programmer, I'm sure you know what "gone gold" means. That is a clear signal that a release is about to happen. [Ever heard of that Vumil? didn't think so, STFU] I'm speculating, but probably the WoW has gone gold signal hit Smedley's inbox, and he said that's it folks, we release on X date, period. Do what ever it takes, get it ready for launch.
BTW did you mean to say that I'm an EQ2 Fanboi?

You're reading an awful lot into a very simple statement. People in the game industry work insane hours at the end of a project even if they are releasing their game in June when nobody else does and games don't sell because people are outside in the sun and stuff.
When did they move up the release date for EQ2? I preordered it a few months in advance and the date I had then was the same as the real release date.
Gone gold is a funny term. It could mean just about anything since nobody has any way to prove whether the game is finished or not when the company says it. It's even more meaningless for an online game because there's always a big patch on day 1, so it apparently wasn't ever gold. Gone gold for EQ2 and WoW meant "hmm, let's make CDs now and hope we can finish the game in the next two weeks before they hit the shelves."
No, I figured you for a WoW fanboi since you have this notion that Sony is a bunch of idiots caught with their pants down. /shrug

Um, no.Vumil wrote:I don't see that as being plausible with 2 mages or even a warlock and a mage unless its a really specific mob, which is probably broken.Ive seen 2 mages or a mage and a warlock in WoW that can kill elite mobs up to 10-14 lvls above them duo ... I personally enjoy the game play of the paladin alot better on WoW but im not quitting EQ by far :p
Not unless the mob is broken. pets aren't that good, and they'd get 100% resists and 0 dps on casts.

I know exactly what it means, stop assuming things, idiot. The WoW release date was announced a month and a half before it had "gone gold". It was WELL known they were pushing for a November or December release date 5-6 months before it had been announced. You are speculating about things you have no facts on, which is all you have done, speculate. As a programmer, I'm sure you know what "gone gold" means. Vivendi wouldn't have let Blizz slip past T-Day. Sony wouldn't have gone past then either. WoW got their day called first so Sony had to go before. No real other way it could have gone.
To be honest, I don't really think Sony got a boost releasing EQ2 first anyway. I think most people had made their minds up which way they wanted to go by that time and not many people spend $50 just for 2 weeks of a MMOG.
In addition, /agree Bahd+Vumil.
